Response time while driving

How many of us are conscious of this? Once we see an event then there is some delay for us to respond - say press the break or turn the steering etc and then there is a delay for the vehicle to respond and stop or change direction. This means based on the speed there should be a minimum distance between vehicles. In a busy city street the impact of a collision can be less but just imagine on a highway where vehicles are driving at high speed.

I was travelling in a nice new rented Scorpio through Durgapur highway. The driver was a young, proud and decent guy who has done reasonably well in this profession. He is proud of this vehicle and makes a decent money. I noticed that he was getting too close to the trucks and was suddenly changing lane to overtake. I asked him why are you so close and he sounded very confident and gave me a short speech on his driving credentials. I then explained to him the need to keep a distance , not sure whether he understood but from then he maintained a distance. I thanked him at the end of the journey and he nodded his head, not sure again whether he understood and will follow this.

To summarise keeping a safe distance from the car ahead reduces the risk of collision. The distance will depend on road condition, speed and weather.

Better be safe then sorry !! You might not get another chance ..

Introduction

Hi All,

Welcome to this blog site. This blog is to increase awareness and set up a forum to reduce road accidents in India. This is increasing in a alarming rate and has been fatal in many cases. The human lose and impacts on families and societies are permanent but are we doing anything. I am not convinced , we seem to go in for a "chalta hain" attitude and seem to forget the damage that the last accident has caused.

This site is in memory of my parents Late Bhupendra Nath Bhattacharya and Late Rina Bhattacharya whom I lost in tragic road accident in Gauhati on 20Th January 2006. They were travelling to the airport to catch a flight to Kolkata and were just 10 minutes away from the airport when a truck came from the opposite side and hit the auto rickshaw in which they were travelling. They died on the spot.

I and my family suffered the biggest lost that day. It is more than 18 months now. I have applied logic, statistical theory everything but cannot get an explanation for callousness and sheer irresponsible behaviour of someone. The driver had no regards to traffic rules and the owner of the truck did not change the tyres of the truck which was flat without any threads.

This came as a front page news and was there in the public eye for a few days.I saw some banners hung on that stretch for a few days - till rain or storm drove it away.

Anyway enough of personal grief, I want to make an attempt to increase awareness and report what is going on. So if you reach this site please feel free to post your comments.

Best Regards
Abhijit
